A couple of weeks ago we met Mr. Keith Lessor. Many may recognize him because he is a homeless man who regularly travels down Harrison Ave., both dogs by his side (Freedom to the left and Patriot to the right.) Heartworm disease is a parasite that infects the heart after being transmitted via mosquitos. If left untreated the disease is always fatal to the animal. Sadly, because many people are unaware of the dire effects of heartworms, we rescue an average of eight dogs per month with this deadly disease. Black Beard is one of the 14 "Pirate Pups" we rescued from another group that will soon have to close its doors. Unfortunately a few of the pups are very timid and scared (Schmee, Murtogg, Davy Jones and Black Beard.) Our kennel staff is dedicated to making sure their stay with us is as comfortable as possible, allowing them the best chance to find a forever family. St. Tammany Humane Society answered the call to help an injured male pup named Julio. Julio was suffering from two fractured back legs and was trapped underneath a hair salon in Bogalusa. There was no telling how long he had been trapped or how long it had been since his last meal. We had to act fast! After a flat tire, a broken exhaust clamp and very little sleep, five women are heading back to Louisiana today (Sunday) with an empty trailer and five very happy hearts. On Friday, December 16th at 5:00pm the St. Tammany Humane Society will take a leap of faith with 23 + homeless dogs and head to a Mega-Adoption Event eight hours away in Jacksonville, Florida. The adoption event, held by First Coast No More Homeless Pets, has helped find forever homes for over 12,000 dogs in the four years of its existence.
