An Update on Homeless Patriot & Freedom. Keith's Help Out not Handout

homeless_man_humane_societyA couple of weeks ago we met Mr. Keith Lessor. Many may recognize him because he is a homeless man who regularly travels down Harrison Ave., both dogs by his side (Freedom to the left and Patriot to the right.) He loves both of these pups and they are well cared for by not only Mrs. Lessor, but also by our community. A kind woman (who would like to remain anonymous) wanted to help Keith get both of his dogs neutered at our veterinary clinic and we decided to thank her on Facebook for her generosity. We were not ready for what came next.

Not surprisingly, Keith received an outpouring of support from our community. We had no idea just how popular this man and his two pups were! The support was so overwhelming we decided to facilitate financial assistance for Patriot and Freedom's future veterinary care. With the help of the kind woman, Patriot and Freedom were both dropped off for their neuters this week. Their surgeries were a success and now these two furry friends will never contribute to the population of homeless animals. Keith volunteered his time the entire day Patriot and Freedom were here and has been volunteering everyday since! He also showed interest in working for our organization, but lacks the appropriate paperwork that allows him to be employed in the US. We are working with another non-profit organization to get Keith the necessary paperwork so he can begin working. It is clear this guy is not looking for a handout, but rather a help out!

In addition to their surgeries, Patriot and Freedom were tested for heartworm disease and started on heartworm, flea and tick prevention. Because Keith and his dogs live outside, protecting them from these illnesses is paramount. Patriot and Freedom's heartworm, flea and tick prevention will cost $500 annually. Being homeless, Keith can not carry an abundance of physical items. He has also received so much dog food from kind individuals, he donated some of the bags to our own homeless animals! For these many reasons, we ask for your assistance in providing these two cuties the necessary care they need to stay happy and healthy!

In addition to helping Patriot and Freedom receive the veterinary care, we are also in need for funding to purchase 18 steel cages that will be placed in our new intake room. Formerly an office space, our Director of Placement, Programs, and Welfare, Ms. Jacqie Bella, envisioned this room as the perfect place to house new animals until their intake exams have been conducted. As it stands today, we have four kennels set up in this room. Purchasing additional kennels will allow us to save even more lives!
