Spay Day this Sunday to fix 40 of the Disaster Dogs!

This Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm the St. Tammany Humane Society will begin the process of spay/neutering 40 of the 150 + dogs rescued from flooded shelters across our state. With the help of volunteer veterinarians, volunteers from the community and humane society staff, the shelter will hold a facility - wide “Spay Day” to get these dogs fixed and into the humane society’s Adoption Program.

In the past two weeks the St. Tammany Humane Society has rescued nearly 200 animals from flooded shelters in surrounding areas including Tangipahoa, Vermilion, Lafayette and Livingston Parishes. The number of dogs rescued is the largest our organization has EVER saved at one time, in our entire 63 years of existence.

The journey for these dogs has only just begun. A handful of the ones rescued from these shelters came vaccinated, fixed, chipped and ready for adoption; all of which have found forever homes. For the others, especially the ones with Heartworm Disease, the road to adoption has just begun.

We continue to express our gratitude for the hard work of staff and volunteers who has selflessly made their personal life the rescue of these animals; the families who took in a dog they knew absolutely nothing about; the countless individuals, groups and businesses who have donated truck loads of supplies and to the people who took their hard earned money to write checks to their cause. It is only through the generosity of our community that the shelter is able to help hundreds of animals each year - a statement we have lived by for many years.

Due to the continued medical care and housing of these rescued dogs, we still ask for your help! You can donate directly to our disaster efforts HERE or by mailing a check to our Covington facility located at 20384 Harrison Ave. Covington, LA 70433. Supplies can also be dropped off.
