Our Office Cat Saves a Life

Here at the St. Tammany Humane Society things can often happen at the "drop of a hat." As an animal shelter and community veterinary clinic we see a variety of cases; you literally never know what's going to walk through our doors. A normal Monday may consist of a good Samaritan bringing in a dog hit by a car, to an animal who swallowed a foreign object and even a litter of sick kitties knocking on death's door. This, along with many other reasons, is why our veterinary clinc is so unique.

And then there's Momma, the office cat:

Momma keeps all of us here entertained throughout the day. If she's not trying to play with the animals being seen in the clinic, she is perching somewhere odd or can be found in a recently opened box. We dress her up on holidays and put silly clothes or hats on her.

But last week Momma did something very extraordinary for another cat, making her even more special to us than she already was.

Friday a very pale cat came into our clinic. It didn't take the doctor long to realize this cat was very sick. The reason was due to a flea infestation that caused severe anemia. Blood results confirmed the anemia and without a blood transfusion the cat would not make it for very much longer.

After the owner agreed to the transfusion we contacted Dr. Beth Audibert at Three Rivers Animal Hospital. She wanted the cat to arrive at her clinic ASAP to begin the lengthy life saving procedure. One thing was missing, a blood donor. Knowing that Momma cat is very healthy we thought she would be a perfect fit to help. Both patients arrived at Dr Audibert's clinic within 30 minutes and the transfusion began. By morning, both furry patients were eating, walking and ready to go home.

A Thank you is on order to Dr. Audibert and her crew at Three Rivers Animal Hospital for all of their hard work!!!

A BIG furry thank you to Momma for everything you did to help the other kitty and just for being the purrfect cat you are!! We love you Momma!
