Meet the Newest Veterinarians of STHS!

Meet Dr. April C. Kelly, DVM:

Dr. Kelly was born and raised in New Orleans, LA where her love for animals began. As a young child her closest companion was a chocolate, toy poodle with the very original name of “Poodle.” Dr. Kelly attended Xavier University where she received a Bachelor of Science in Biology before attending the Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation in 2009, Dr. Kelly and her family made the move to Colorado Springs where she practiced ER Medicine. Before making her way back home, like so many of us do, she stopped in Frederick, MD. She expanded her experience to General Practice and now she's part of our veterinary team. Dr. Kelly expressed her excitement to help not only animals in need of a loving home, but also already loved pets from the community.

Dr. Kelly’s Pet: a Bluetick Coonhound named Spiggs.

Meet Dr. Michelle Logan-Candal, DVM:

Dr. Michelle Logan-Candal is originally from Slidell, LA where she currently lives with her family of six (that’s three humans and three furry-members.) Michelle attended Louisiana State University for her undergraduate and doctorate degrees. Go Tigers! She graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 2014 before coming to work for the humane society. She says her favorite part of being a veterinarian is client education and the trust in taking care of people’s furry, family members. We are excited to call Dr. Michelle part of our STHS family!

Dr. Michelle’s pets include two dogs (Annabelle and Lola) and one kitty named Rain.

Meet Dr. Maria Delaup, DVM:

Dr. Maria Delaup was born and raised in Sweden until she moved to the United States in 1996. Dr. Delaup studied at LSU’s School of Veterinary Medicine where she graduated in 2006. She is also certified in acupuncture from the Chi Institute and has studied herbal medicine. Dr. Delaup practiced mixed animal before ending with dogs and cats here at the St. Tammany Humane Society. Dr. Delaup and her husband have four children all of the four-legged kind, including three herding-class pups: Rudy, Muttilda, Bookit and a miniature pony named Lily. In her free time Dr. Delaup enjoys agility (which she does with all of her dogs), running (her longest race was 53 miles) and riding (she does not have a riding horse at the moment.) And, like many of us here, her favorite part of the job is working with the animals!

What's so special about our Veterinary Team?

What some of the public may not know is just how special our vets and vet techs are. The veterinarian team at the St. Tammany Humane Society not only help client animals, they also take care of each and every resident of our shelter. This includes preventative shots, spays and neuters, nursing sick animals back to health and hundreds of heartworm cases we treat annually. Our shelter houses thousands of dogs and cats annually and it is these doctors who give them a second chance at life. On Spay Day alone, which happens twice a year, our veterinarians fix over 100 cats in only one business day. Not only do these doctors care for the aniamls here, they also see thousands of clients each year from the community. Lastly, the money raised from our veterinary clinic goes directly back into the shelter. Without these vets, there would be no St. Tammany Humane Society!
