Doobie: Spending his golden years with his guardian angel

Doobie was one of many dogs rescued during the devastating floods last August. He, along with 60 other pups, traveled by horse trailer as part of our largest rescue from Vermillion Parish. He was temporarily fostered by dedicated STHS foster parent, Ms. Mel Borne where it was quickly determined this old guy had a variety of health concerns. Although it was devastating his owners abandoned him at his age, we were excited to give him a great home to live out his last days.

Then, Doobie met Mr. Steve.

Mr. Steve is a senior citizen himself who came to our rescue looking for a senior canine companion to share their golden years together. Through our Seniors for Seniors Program, Doobie's adoption fee would be waived and his annual vaccinations would be covered by our rescue for the remainder of his life. Unfortunately, Doobie’s medical conditions are far too expensive for Mr. Steve who is a on a fixed income as many seniors in our community are. Doobie suffers from chronic skin infections and thyroid issues that will last the rest of his life. Doobie requires a special diet and antibiotics totaling approximately $200 per month.

Mr. Steve is now what we call a "Fospice" parent (that's foster and hospice put together). Mr. Steve has dedicated his life to being Doobie’s best friend until his remaining days. Our rescue covers the veterinary bill and Mr. Steve covers the shelter and affection! We are so thankful for Mr. Steve’s commitment to this senior pup.

Please consider making a donation in Doobie’s honor. We believe he still has many years ahead of him and we want them to be not only full of love and affection from Mr. Steve, we also want him to be as comfortable as possible until his very last day.

Not only will your contribution help Doobie, it will also allow us to provide future veterinary care to other senior pets in a similar situation. To donate, please click HERE.
