A Story of 6 Mom Dogs & their 50 Puppies. Defeating All Odds!

Not even one month after the devastating floods hit Louisiana August of 2016, six very special mommy dogs and their 50 newborn puppies needed our help! We didn't plan for this group of mothers, but when they came, we too received a lesson in love. Each of these poor mommy dogs suffered at the hands of uncaring humans, but through it all they each were amazing mothers to their babies and now wonderful dogs to their adopted families!

The first call came September of 2016. There was a momma pup at Bogalusa Animal Control who had just given birth to 11 puppies! We gave our rescue partners the go ahead to transfer her and her puppies to our shelter. The rest was history! Within one week of her transfer, it was storming puppies! Faith, Hope, Promise, Trinity, Dancing Queen, Nadia and all 50 of their puppies were transferred to our care at St. Tammany Humane Society!

Even more disheartening than the fact that each one of these mommy dogs and her puppies had been abandoned, was that five of the six mothers were suffering from heartworm disease; a testament of human negligence. Heartworm disease is easily preventable and if not prevented, it is always fatal. Each mother was treated or is in treatment right now to ensure they have the best chance at a happy, healthy life!

Every puppy is now in a warm and loving forever home! Four of the six mothers have also found forever families - Faith, Hope, Promise and Dancing Queen. Both Trinity and Nadia are still undergoing heartworm treatment (in foster homes) and will be well on their way to new families very soon!

Now we look back and are so grateful for what we were able to accomplish. Rescuer, Gina Derouen, recalls the first week, "Looking back on each mom I picked up, I remember their face of hurt and fear of where they were going. I remember crying with each one and hugging them promising a better life. Without the humane society they wouldn't have that life I promised them and for that I am so grateful!"

We are so grateful to have the support of our community. It is only through caring people like you that we are able to save innocent animals just like this group! If you would like to meet our current dogs in heartworm treatment and learn how you can help, CLICK HERE!
