Now that we are looking back at the August floods of 2016, we’re realizing just how much work went into getting these 150 + dogs into forever homes! While each and every adoption is very special to us, there were a handful of very meaningful adoptions that took place directly because of the people we met from the disaster. Here are some of most memorable adoptions and adoption days after the August floods.  Adoption Day #1 On August 20th, we…

I remember it like it was yesterday….. I was bringing the mother-in-law to the airport when I got the call. “Tangi Humane is flooding! Can you help?” I said yes and the rest was history. As the one year anniversary of the August flood approaches and we look back on those few weeks, there are a few things that really jumped out in my mind: I can still see the cars, one after another, pulling into our parking lot to drop off donations; I can still…

Doobie was one of many dogs rescued during the devastating floods last August. He, along with 60 other pups, traveled by horse trailer as part of our largest rescue from Vermillion Parish. He was temporarily fostered by dedicated STHS foster parent, Ms. Mel Borne where it was quickly determined this old guy had a variety of health concerns. Although it was devastating his owners abandoned him at his age, we were excited to give him a great home…

By Dr. Estelle Felarise, St. Tammany Humane Society Medical Director & Amanda Matthew, STHS Veterinary Assistant Is your pet at risk? Yes!!!! With temperatures in the 80s+ outside, your pet is at a high risk for heat stroke, especially without adequate shade and water. At first glance, you see an adorable 15-week-old puppy named Pongo. What you don't see is the immense pain this poor little guy is enduring. Pongo was originally rescued in Texas by one of our regular veterinary clients. A visit with our veterinarians revealed Pongo’s elbow was fractured and could only be fixed through specialty surgery. Unfortunately, the family could not afford the surgery, giving us two options: amputate the leg or take…

As the summer months approach, it's almost one year since we rescued 200 dogs from flooded shelters across our state. Albany was part of the first group of "Disaster Dogs" rescued August of 2016. The group of 22 were transported by volunteers from Tangi Humane Society, a no-kill shelter in the Hammond area completely submerged in the floods. Since that time, he was treated for heartworm disease, neutered and updated on his vaccinations. He has…

Jim came to our veterinary clinic suffering from an untreated yeast infection, a severe flea allergy dermatitis and hypothyroidism. His family could not afford to treat him so Jim was surrendered to our rescue at the age of nine on July 8, 2016. With a little TLC from our Veterinary Team, Jim was given a second chance at life and on August 29, 2016 Jim was adopted by an amazing family of four! We are happy to report Mr. Jim is hairless no more!…
